Quiz of 2020

The first quiz of each New Year takes a retrospective look at the year just gone. This quiz went live on 5 January 2021.
In the three link rounds, all questions have a ‘2020’ theme.
I’ve already put the ‘Died Last Year’ quiz on Facebook; here it is again, with answers on page 2.
Answers to the link rounds and ‘39 Steps’ to follow.

Christmas 2020

Here’s our (deliberately non-Christmassy) Christmas card, with a General Knowledge Jigsaw puzzle. You can download a printable copy of the puzzle here:
Tips for solving this jigsaw-type puzzle
Remember the clues are in alphabetical order of their answers. Solve as many as you can (googling if you have to). You may find it useful to list your answers according to the number of letters they have.
Barred crossword grids (like this one) don’t have black squares. Instead, the bars show where answers (‘entries’) begin and end.
You’ll see there are only two clues with nine-letter answers. Solve those clues, then use the other answers you’ve got so far to decide which goes in each of the two nine-letter spaces (both ‘down’ entries).
Now fit the other entries around what you have entered so far. You’ll find you have some answers left over. Think about what needs to be done to ‘reveal’ them.

York Sloggers & Betters puzzle 2018

A special crossword set by Elgar (aka Enigmatist, Nimrod, Io) — challenging, but much enjoyed, with a great PDM (that’s the penny-drop moment, in case you didn’t know).

For an explanation and solution, go to crypticsue’s blog on Big Dave‘s site.

What is a PDM?
